The Columbia Learning Society
To help individuals, Columbia College established an independent and separate non-profit society called The Columbia Learning Society. The Society’s principle aim is to provide bursaries to children and adults who wish to attend workshops, seminars, courses or programs at Columbia College.
The Columbia Learning Society has been active since September 2002. To date, over 2800 adults and children utilized bursaries to attend classes, workshops or tutoring sessions at Columbia College.
Free Saturday Workshops
Each Saturday (excluding holiday weekends) from September through June, The Columbia Learning Society offers free workshops from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. These workshops cover a variety of topics such as computer applications training, communication skills, study skills, and other topics.
Free Youth Tutoring
In order to help youth with their school-related work, The Columbia Learning Society offers a free tutoring service. Tutoring sessions are held each Saturday from September to June (excluding holiday weekends) from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm.
Charitable Events
Columbia College donates previously used computer equipment to staff and students as well as to non-profit organizations. The college also spends time each year having fundraising events for various charitable organizations.
Bursaries
Each year a limited number of bursaries are provided to those individuals attending Columbia College who have been identified as potential candidates based on the society’s established needs criteria.
Dental Services
Columbia College offers dental x-rays, dental polishing, and fluoride treatments to individuals for a fee of $10 in June and December of each year. The dental appointments are provided by students from the “Dental Assistant Professional Program”, under the supervision of our dental staff and dentist. The dentist will screen suitable candidates and prescribe x-rays for admission to polish and fluoride clinics. Dental Assistant Professional Program students will then provide the service. The x-rays will be given to participants to take to their own dentist for a complete dental examination. (These Columbia College Dental Services may be valued at $350.00 in a private dental clinic.)
Exam Proctoring
Columbia offers a proctoring service to students of other institutions who need a location in which to write exams. A Columbia College staff member will provide a suitable location within the college and will oversee the exam according to the instructions provided. Once the exam is complete it will be returned to the other institution. The fee for this service is $25 per exam. Students requesting exam proctoring for 9-credit Nursing Refresher courses will be charged $75 per exam.
Keyboarding Competency Testing
Columbia provides both keyboarding and numeric keyboarding exams for both students and the general public. The fee is $20.00 to take one exam or $25.00 to take both. Upon completion, a hard-copy assessment summary of the exam results will be provided for your records.
International Day
Each year students of the English as a Second Language Program host International Day, a celebration meant to showcase the College’s cultural diversity. The event normally occurs during the month of June, with over 20 different cultural groups creating interactive displays and activities highlighting the music, dance, food, and traditions of their particular community. Over 90% of the supplies, prizes and items used in the context of planning and presentation of these activities are donated by the students from these various Cultural Communities.
