DENT 102: Orientation to the Dental Profession

This course aims to prepare the student for conduct appropriate to a professional setting. Prerequisite: None
DENT 113: Dental Sciences
Credits: 3.0
This theory based course includes the study of dental terminology, anatomy and physiology of the head, oral and dental anatomy, dental disease and pathology. Emphasis is placed on the theory necessary to problem-solve patient care procedures. Prerequisite: None
DENT 124: Dental Records
Credits: 3.5
This course aims to provide the student with the knowledge required to gather and accurately record relevant and important patient information. Co-requisites: DENT 120, DENT 150
DENT 135: Clinical Support Procedures
Credits: 3.0
This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills to apply appropriate infection control procedures and assist with medical/dental emergencies in a dental practice setting. The student will become familiar with safety procedures and WHMIS. Co-requisites: DENT 102, DENT 113, DENT 124 Prerequisite: Level “C” CPR
DENT 106: Pre-Clinical Science
Credits: 1.5
This course aims to teach the student about the ergonomics of the dental team, incorporating principles of four and six-handed dentistry. The student will be able to identify common dental instruments by name and use. Co-requisites: DENT 113, DENT 124
DENT 147: Clinical Chairside Procedures
Credits: 6.0
The course aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skills required to assist with restorative procedures. This knowledge will include the intra-oral skills that the dental assistant may be required to apply during the provision of restorative services. Co-requisites: DENT 102, DENT 113, DENT 124, DENT 135, DENT 106
DENT 108: Preventive Dentistry & Nutrition
Credits: 2.5
This course provides the student with the required general knowledge to assess, evaluate, plan, educate and promote dental preventive programs to the individual patient and community groups. Co-requisites: DENT 102, DENT 113, DENT 124, DENT 135, DENT 106 Prerequisite: Level “C” CPR
DENT 109: Polishing Techniques
Credits: 4.0
This course provides the theoretical and clinical knowledge necessary for learners to develop skills required to assess patient needs, determine appropriate treatment plans and perform selective polishing and application of topical fluoride in a clinical situation. Students will provide services to the public with direct facilitator supervision. Co-requisites: DENT 102, DENT 113, DENT 124, DENT 135, DENT 106, DENT 108

DENT 150: Specialty Procedures
Credits: 4.5
This course is an introduction to the specialties of prosthodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, pediatrics and orthodontics. A study of the materials, instruments and equipment associated with those procedures performed in a general dental practice are emphasized. Intra-oral skills included in this course include the application of desensitizing agents, suture removal, probing techniques including but not limited to PSR (Periodontal Screening and Recording), and application of Pit and Fissure Sealants. DENT 161: Laboratory Procedures
Credits: 2.5
This course provides the student with basic theoretical and clinical knowledge. In a laboratory situation, the student will practice and demonstrate various laboratory skills including pouring and trimming of study models, construction of custom sportsguards, custom trays and whitening trays. DENT 172: Dental Radiographs
Credits: 5.0
This course is designed to provide background knowledge and general information needed to master dental radiology procedures. Emphasis is placed on safety procedures, equipment and application of theory in a clinical situation. This course also provides practical application of theory through clinical assignments and labs. This course offers various techniques and situations which the student will encounter with both equipment and patients in the workplace. Students will provide services to the public with direct supervision. (Intra-oral and extra-oral x-rays will be exposed, processed and mounted as diagnosed by a Dentist on-site). DENT 183: Interim Restorations
Credits: 2.0
This course provides the student with basic theoretical knowledge. In a laboratory situation, the student will practice and demonstrate competency in producing intermediate and provisional restorations and placement and removal of gingival retraction cord. DENT 120: Administrative Dental Assistant
Credits: 5.5
This course provides the student with the skills necessary to function effectively as a dental office administrator. Co-requisites: DENT 102, DENT 124, DENT 135
DENT 130: Co-operative Education & Final Exams (Dental Office)
Credits: 7.0
This course has been designed to provide students with practical experience in a dental practice. Students will spend four weeks in an office selected by the student. During this time the student will comply with the hours of work, rules and regulations of the practicum office. Evaluations will be completed by the practicum office in consultation with the Dental Assistant Program Faculty.
