Registered Nurse (RN) Refresher Program

Introduction

Columbia College in collaboration with Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton can help you refresh your nursing skills and can update you on recent changes in health care in Alberta. This program is designed to meet the needs of nurses (RNs) who have been away from practice for 5 years or more and those who have been internationally educated, and deemed eligible by the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta.

Program Description and Delivery

The Grant MacEwan Nursing Refresher program offered through Columbia College is a distance delivery program. Learners can access materials, receive instructor support on an appointment basis at Columbia College, and do self- study at home. Hands-on clinical experiences are arranged once theory and nursing skills modules are completed. Students can start the program at anytime. Students have up to 15 months to complete the program.

Employment Opportunities

Registered nurses provide professional nursing services for individuals, families, groups and communities. They deliver health education programs, participate in research, and provide consultative nursing services to promote, maintain and restore client health.

NURS 331

Nursing Theory Part A

In this course, students review the basic concepts of nursing practice through examination of the Allen Nursing Model and the nursing process.  Health promotion theory is explored as a means to support individuals in actualization of their health potential.  An overview of the Canadian health care system and the special needs of community health nursing are apprised

 

 

NURS 332

Nursing Theory Part B

This course focuses on the interdisciplinary rehabilitation and support of clients with chronic and acute health conditions while embracing the concepts of health promotion and disease prevention.  The Allen Nursing Model is incorporated into specific health alterations, illustrating the model’s versatility in different areas of care across the life span.  Students examine anatomy and physiology within common disorders of the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary, digestive, nervous/special senses, endocrine, and reproductive systems.

 

 

NURS 333

Nursing Theory Part C

In this course students examine various concepts and skills related to health assessment, drug calculations, medication administration, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.  Students explore nursing care across the life span and the significance of therapeutic communication in meeting the health needs of clients.  Professional responsibilities of the registered nurse and current issues that impact client care are also addressed

 

 

NURS 334

Nursing Clinical Skills

The skills lab setting of this course affords the student an opportunity to review and practice basic nursing assessment and nursing procedures that are required in a medical/surgical clinical environment.  Aspects of health promotion and prevention, and the principles of effective client education are incorporated into all clinical nursing skills.

 

 

NURS 335

Nursing Refresher Clinical

The practicum focus of this course affords the student an opportunity to provide safe, client-focused nursing care of the hospitalized adult client.  Students in the clinical setting are preceptored by a Registered Nurse from an assigned medical or surgical clinical unit.



 

Specialty Topics

NURS 304

Home Care Nursing

This course examines the role of the nurse in the home care setting.  Students apply the nursing process to both individuals and families in the home care setting.  Specialized home care services, case management and ethical issues in home health are discussed.

 

 

NURS 305

Mental Health Disorders

This course introduces nurses to the challenges of mental health nursing, with a focus on therapeutic communication techniques, basic mental health principles, mental health promotion and rehabilitation.  Psychiatric disorders, such as mood disorders, cognitive disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders are examined.

 

 

NURS 306

Nursing Care of the Child Bearing Family

In this course, the student explores the nurse’s role and interdisciplinary collaboration in meeting the obstetrical care needs of the family.  Maternity health care trends and issues, including the areas of antepartum, pregnancy, labour and delivery, and postpartum are addressed.

 

 

NURS 307

Oncology Nursing

The focus of this course is on health promotion, detection of risk factors, deviations from health, and the provision of care and treatment for persons with cancer.  Oncology nursing practice, including cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliation, and bereavement are examined within the context of the Allen Nursing Model.

 

 

NURS 308

Child Health Nursing

In this course, students examine the role of the pediatric nurse.  Emphasis is placed upon growth and development as an essential assessment guide in the care of children.  The Allen Nursing Model is applied to the nursing management of children living and dying with various pediatric health conditions.  The student explores a family-oriented approach in the care of children.

 

 

NURS 311

Gerontological Nursing

In this course students examine the aging process, theories of aging, and the factors that can interfere with or promote healthy aging.  Social, economical and political issues related to older clients are explored.

 

 

NURS 312

Trauma

This course focuses on the interdisciplinary rehabilitation and support of clients with chronic and acute health conditions while embracing the concepts of health promotion and disease prevention.  The Allen Nursing Model is incorporated into specific health alterations, illustrating the model’s versatility in different areas of care across the life span.  Students examine anatomy and physiology within common disorders of the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary, digestive, nervous/special senses, endocrine, and reproductive systems.
