Career Services
Your career services advisor provides you with career and employment-related services. You will be guided through job-seeking strategies, resume writing, interview preparation/mock interviews, application forms and other employment-related activities. A Job Board that is located in the library is regularly updated with job leads. The career advisor contacts graduates on a regular basis to record and report their employment/education status to the school and government and address any challenges the graduate may be experiencing. There is continued support for graduates for a full year upon completion of a program of studies.
The career services advisor is knowledgeable about the current labour market and is able to guide students in the areas of career discovery, practicum placement and work experience. Students may choose to take part in a Co-operative Education/Practicum/Work Experience to augment their curricular studies. The career advisor provides support, direction, and supervision for students while they are in a practicum. Although students are expected to identify their own co-operating employer, the College has developed a network of potential practicum placements to assist students in obtaining work experience and/or employment.
With the advice and support of career advisors, students experience actual work situations where they get on-the-job experience. This hands-on experience enables Columbia’s students to learn by doing and get practice relating classroom instruction to a work situation, which is critical as today’s employers want people with both theoretical knowledge and experience.
