Informational Interviews

Informational Interviews are a tool used to gather career-related information on positions of interest, with the purpose of making a career decision. Informational interviews can provide insights about what certain jobs are "really" like, allowing you to focus on occupations that you will truly enjoy. They are also an effective way of building contacts and gaining firsthand knowledge through people currently working in the fields/occupations of interest.

Build Your Network

Build your network (also known as relationship building) is one of the most effective ways to learn about career paths/options out there. Consider all of the people you know in your life, personally and professionally, and all of the different occupations that they have! Get to know as many people as you can within your field of interest– faculty, peers, friends, neighbours, professionals, etc. Don’t be afraid to tap into the wealth of knowledge your various contacts have. Some of the best ways to build your network of contacts are:

  • Volunteering

  • Information Interviewing

  • Job Shadowing

  • Attend Events (Career Fairs, Conferences, Workshops, Employer Events, etc.)

  • Join Related Professional Organizations

  • Find a Mentor
