Canada has been ranked as one of the top countries in the world for having a majority population that hold a post-secondary education, according to OECD, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, stats. The OECD has 36 members, including Canada, which analyze the education system of students through a series of tests, with the mission to promote social well-being and improve the economy overall, worldwide. Many mature students, above the age of 25, are returning to college looking for a career change. Maybe they can no longer be employed a physically challenging role or are looking for something they will find more fulfillment in. Some hurdles for mature students to return to attend college can include time requirements and funding, as many are also balancing family and other financial responsibilities. One of the significant aspects of some colleges, such as Columbia College, is the ability to receive a quality education in shorter periods – completing programs within weeks and months rather than years.
The motivation varies by student, but nearly everyone should consider how advancing their education could change their future for the better.
What follows are a few of the many benefits and motivations of going back to school, regardless of the age of the student.
1) Want to Earn More Money
You get paid more when you know more. What many people don’t realize is that many owners and managers are unwilling or unable to promote or increase the salary of someone without an education. Even if you don’t get a degree or even a certificate – get more education. Look for courses and programs that will develop your skills and knowledge in your field.
2) Time for a Change
It doesn’t matter how long you have been in a job or a profession – sometimes you need a change. Perhaps you have been in a position for a while, or maybe there’s another job you always wanted? Getting an education in that new field might be your first step into the career of your dreams. Even if you have never considered going to college before, it’s important to remember that getting a college education can lead to a whole new career and subsequent lifestyle.
3) Making Lemonade
Many people find their entry into a career that they discover isn’t for them, but they also find that after putting in the work and money to get into it, they are stuck and don’t have the resources to get into something else. Fortunately, once you are in a career, you probably have the time and the money to commit to getting other education. Better yet, you might be able to get that education without the loan debt that younger people find so crippling.
In part two of our blog, we will continue with the remaining benefits and motivators of attending college as a mature student.
