    Accounting Assistant

Accounting clerks are typically entry-level professions, yet they play a critical part in the functioning of the company. They keep track of records and reconcile accounts and often run the day-to-day accounting needs. It is a vitally important role in any business.

So, what factors go into making an accounting assistant a success? The main six are as follows:

    1) Get your Certificate First

The first step to achieve your dream is to take a program to improve your education and skills such as an accounting assistant. It is best to do it at a renowned college such as Columbia College.  This program includes a work experience component so you can have hands-on, relevant experience.

    2) Make Use of Previous Work Experiences

If you’ve had previous jobs that allowed you to build a variety of useful talents, mention it in your resume and other application materials. Accounting, record-keeping, client service, working with confidential papers, customer service and knowledge of financial software are all examples of general experience that make you work out as an accounting assistant.

    3) Refresh Your Software Knowledge

An accounting clerk should be able to use the Microsoft Office Suite, with a focus on Excel. You could also want to learn QuickBooks, which is commonly used in office accounting professions. You’ll have an advantage over the competition if you’ve worked with payroll, performance analysis, and depreciation software.

    4) Develop Your Soft Talents

Another requirement for an accounting clerk is excellent soft skills. Because you’ll be working with employees from different departments, you’ll need to be a master of communication. It’s also critical that you’re well-organized and adept at maintaining adequate records you’re in charge of.

    5) Pay Attention to the Smallest Details

Another soft skill that deserves special consideration in your role is an eye for detail. As an accounting clerk, you’ll be in charge of a variety of activities that require this skill.

    6) Continue to Learn

It’s critical to maintain your education, whether your professional objective is to become an accounting assistant or you intend to move on to another role in the future. Utilize any courses, seminars, or other training programs that your company may provide.

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikuni, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, including Chiniki, Bearpaw, and Wesley First Nations. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. We acknowledge that the land on which we gather in Mohkinstsis is the traditional gathering place for many Indigenous people. We honour and respect the history, language, ceremonies, and culture of the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit who call this territory home. As an organization, Columbia College acknowledges the use of this land to educate adults for a better future for all.
