    Careers in Canada

A common concern among people in their late 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s is whether they should go back to school. They may be unhappy with their current career, or they want to improve their prospects for new positions.

Today, switching jobs is relatively common throughout Canada. It’s not uncommon to be a little hesitant when considering changing careers, especially if you’re looking to choose a job you have not had prior experience in.  However, the sense of fulfillment and opportunities can be a great motivator.

Studies suggest that members of Generation X tend to stay at a job for 3.4 years. Those who fit into Generation Y tend to hold positions for just 2.7 years. Many Baby Boomers in Canada had spent 12 years at the same job. Others had spent longer than 20 years with a single employer, but the economy and the state of education has changed. More people in the job force are exploring new avenues of work and improving their job or career for various reasons. This can include a lack of interest in their current position, looking to upgrade their skills, financial, or even job location.

Research suggests that Canadians may hold about 15 jobs in a lifetime today.

Why Are People Changing Careers So Often?

Many people report that they simply found a new passion and decided to pursue it.  The study also showed that others claimed they became bored with their previous work and wanted to explore something new and refreshing. Lack of room for promotion and recent layoffs also spawned new interests. College is available to more people today than it was in the past, so you may have an easier time transitioning into a new career than you think.

People change their careers throughout their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and even 50’s. You have nothing to worry about if you are currently an adult student in the pursuit of a career path that may lead you away from your previous industry.

In spite of any concerns you may have, you can change careers at any time. In fact, Columbia College in Calgary allows its students to graduate in 30 weeks, for some of their programs, with accelerated learning. Programs to explore include health care aides, dental assistants, educational assistants, security guards, and much more.

In short, it’s never too late to get excited about a career you’re passionate about.

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikuni, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, including Chiniki, Bearpaw, and Wesley First Nations. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. We acknowledge that the land on which we gather in Mohkinstsis is the traditional gathering place for many Indigenous people. We honour and respect the history, language, ceremonies, and culture of the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit who call this territory home. As an organization, Columbia College acknowledges the use of this land to educate adults for a better future for all.
