We have specialty courses that will help you. We focus on providing you with strategies to use on a daily basis in the areas of communication, reading, writing, pronunciation & speech clarity for Canadian Language Benchmarks 6-8 (if applicable). Total number of hours of instruction – 24 hours. Classes are once a week except for Pronunciation and Speech Clarity (2 days a week) – 40 hours.

Careers in the Professional Business Workplace
Communication Skills for the Professional Business Workplace!
This course will enhance your communication skills for professional workplace purposes. We will give you strategies to help you accurately follow verbal information and gain confidence in speaking and presenting. Build your spoken vocabulary and fluency. Group discussion will enhance your use of modern business language and social/cultural interaction strategies.
Reading & Writing for the Professional Business Workplace!
You will enhance your reading and writing skills for professional purposes, use professional business-related phrases, formats, correct grammar and composition for writing emails, memos, letters, and report writing. Build your written vocabulary. We will give you strategies to use on a daily basis. Individual conferencing is part of this program.
Pronunciation & Speech Clarity!
CLB4 and higher. Work on correct sound production, word and sentence stress, intonation, and rhythm. Two classes per week.
Careers in Healthcare
Communication Skills for Healthcare Careers!
Much of the healthcare professional’s time is spent listening and speaking to the patient, resident, or client. Improve communication skills that are based on verbal and non-verbal words, phrases, voice tones, facial expressions, gestures, and body language. Improve skills in active and critical listening and answer using correct grammar! You will learn introductory assertive and non-assertive techniques. Build your competence to better understand your own attitude, values and beliefs related to other cultures.
Writing Skills for Healthcare Careers!
Written communication in the Canadian health care setting is extremely important. Develop the necessary written language proficiency needed for your profession. Learn to record observations and actions clearly and accurately. Common grammar challenges will be addressed. Expand functional and medical vocabulary.
Careers in the Trades
Communication Skills for Trades
In this course, we will give you experience in developing oral skills suitable to their trades, reading strategies, writing on the job, and vocabulary building practice. Learn how to do such things as read visual materials, listen on-the-job, participate in meetings, give clear instructions and develop initiative and leadership skills.

All courses are held from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Exception: Pronunciation and Speech Clarity 6:30 – 9:00.
* If a class falls on a holiday Monday, it will be held on Friday of that week.

Textbooks: Additional Cost. You may purchase your textbooks from the Columbia College Bookstore in Building 802-122. Please pay for the books in the main office in Building 802.
